There are some nice looking vegan dishes at Yummy House 芽米屋 in Taipei.

There are some nice looking vegan dishes at Yummy Vegan House 芽米屋 in Taipei.

If you ask people what’s near Qiyan Station in Taipei, the answer will probably be unanimous: nothing.  It’s not exactly a tourist destination, especially with the more alluring sights of Beitou right around the corner.  However, all places have a hidden treasure or two, and Yummy Vegan House 芽米屋 is one of those.  This nice vegan cafe is tucked right next to the busy MRT line and has some tasty eats.  Check out more info after the jump.

Robots of all shapes and sizes make their home at Robot Station 機器人餐廳 in Taichung.

Taiwan has no shortage of restaurants, especially ones with quirky themes.  From airplanes to toilets to jails to ninjas to Barbie, no topic is off limits when it comes to centering a restaurant around it.  Even though robots cannot eat, Robot Station 機器人餐廳 in Taichung still celebrates our automaton friends via milk tea, quesadillas, and other delights.  Check out more info after the jump.

About Animals 動物誌: Rainbow Burgers

Fruit and vegetarian burgers make a great mix at About Animals 動物誌 in Taipei.

Fruit and vegetarian burgers make a great mix at About Animals 動物誌 in Taipei.

To be honest, the phrase “vegetarian hamburger” doesn’t get me excited.  When I think of hamburgers, I think of the biggest chunk of meat oozing with juice and slathered in barbeque sauce.  About Animals 動物誌 has none of that, but it does have probably the best veggie hamburger I’ve ever had.  The bread also rivals its more meatier counterparts, so it is certainly worth visiting even if it may be a bit out of your area of comfort.  More info after the jump.

Hoshina 穗科: The Perfect Noodle

Hoshina 穗科 has veggie udon dishes that are too good to ignore.

Hoshina 穗科 has veggie udon dishes that are too good to ignore.

Taipei is often celebrated for its diversity of food.  From small snacks to big banquets, from local traditional eats to modern western dishes, Taipei has a lot to offer.  Outside of Taiwanese and Chinese food, I would have to say the city’s Japanese options are hard to top.  Hoshina 穗科 is an udon shop looks like it was lifted straight out of Japan, and it may be the best udon I’ve ever had.  As an added bonus (or penalty depending on who you are), it’s completely vegetarian!  Check out more info after the jump.

King Join 京兆尹sets the tone with their storefront.

Travel back to the Imperial Court of China at King Join 京兆尹 in Taipei.  However, there’s a twist… it’s all vegetarian!  The Manchu inspired dishes abolish meat for a more animal friendly alternative.  It may sound strange to see these classic dishes without any meat, but your stomach won’t mind at all.  Check out some pictures from my recent visit.

Sufood 舒果: Infinite Breadsticks and Tasty Veggies

A fashionable appetizer at Sufood 舒果.

A fashionable appetizer at Sufood 舒果.

Tasty is a popular restaurant all over Taiwan due to its dearth of food and nice presentation.  If you enjoy Tasty, but don’t want all the meat, then Sufood 舒果 is for you.  It’s basically a vegetarian clone of Tasty, and it’s even owned by the same company!  Sufood has some diverse menu options that I haven’t seen at any other vegetarian restaurants.  Check out more info after the jump. Waterfront Restaurant 水灣餐廳: On the Riverside

You may find a familiar aesthetic at the Waterfront Restaurant 水灣餐廳.

You may find a familiar aesthetic at the Waterfront Restaurant 水灣餐廳.

Most people who visit Tamsui hang around the old street and fill up on snacks and other vendor food.  It’s hard to make it fifty yards past the MRT station before you find yourself waiting in line for some fried mushrooms or a-gei.  If you do manage to fend off the temptations, you’ll find restaurants trying to take advantage of Tamsui’s riverside by offering clear views of scenery.  One of these is the Waterfront Restaurant 水灣餐廳, a Bali-themed restaurant located so close to the river that the crashing waves may drown out your conversation.  Check out more photos after the jump.

Part Time Su 偶爾素一下: Full Time Vegan Pizza

Five types of veggies crammed onto a pizza at Part Time Su 偶爾素一下 in Taipei.

Five types of veggies crammed onto a pizza at Part Time Su 偶爾素一下 in Taipei.

Every time I get pizza, I always opt for whichever has the most meat.  Sometimes it may be called meat lover’s pizza, or four sausage pizza, but as long as it’s covered with meat I’m up for it.  I had to change my strategy at Part Time Su 偶爾素一下  in Taipei since it’s a vegan pizza place.  Can a pizza be called such without a quarter pound of sausage lathered on top?  I enter a disturbing, yet tasty world of meatless pizza after the jump.

Vege Creek 蔬河: Customize Your Vegan Dinner

Pick your own ingredients at Vege Creek 蔬河.

The vegan eatery Vege Creek 蔬河 has mix of interesting gimmicks.  Is it a hot pot restaurant?  A ramen place?  A supermarket?  The restaurant cherry picks some aspects from all of these places while mixing in some other creative ideas, such as having only one long table in the entire restaurant that everyone eats around.  It is definitely one of the more distinctive restaurants I’ve been to in Taiwan.  Check out some info after the jump.

A delicious vegan brownie you can bite into at Loving Hut 愛家國際餐飲.

Unbeknownst to me, Loving Hut  愛家國際餐飲 is a worldwide vegan restaurant chain, with many stores located in Taiwan.  There are many different types as well, ranging from fast food to international fusion to hot pot.  After doing some research, I was quite surprised to learn that the chain was so massive and there were actually a few near my home in America.  Thankfully, I am no longer woefully ignorant as I made my first trip to a Loving Hut recently.  Check out some photos after the jump.
